The Inspired Contemporary Pianist

C.A.R.E.E.R. System

COGNITION - AWARENESS - RELATIONSHIP - EFFORT - EVALUATION & PLANNING - RESET & RE-CYCLE

The Inspired Contemporary Pianist C.A.R.E.E.R. system is a cyclical process of

mental work, musical practice, creativity and discovery,

that helps you learn and perform

with clear intention and deep connection.

Whether your career in music is entirely private and amateur, or public and high-stakes,

if you apply this system you can stay focused on developing a personalized expertise.

Ditch the comparing and regurgitating and false obligations

that make working on music feel heavy and leave you feeling unworthy.

Embrace learning effectively, developing your own musical voice,

and finding the joy of music again and again.

Cognition

- Understand fundamentally how your brain works: effective learning, metacognition, and flow.

- Music connects language, motor, visual/spatial, and emotional networks

- Organize & connect content in your internal warehouse - create a tagging & retrieval system

Awareness

- See it, acknowledge it, name it

- What is it made of? What does it feel like? What is it called? Why do you care?

- Cultivate self-awareness. What are your strengths, challenges, goals?

- Cultivate an awareness of history and lineage. Where does this come from?

Relationship

- Curiosity, empathy, inspiration

- Cultivate gratitude for music and musicians, and feel it alive inside you.

- The music you play and listen to connects you to lineages. Understand your place in that lineage as audience, aspirant, performer, etc.

- "Tag" music with meaning - progressions, voicings, melodies, techniques, repertoire, etc.

Effort

- Do the work, be in process, and persevere through failure.

- Practice with courageous discipline - follow a trustworthy routine.

- Show up for opportunities.

- It's not about what you have to prove, but what you have to improve.

Evaluation & Planning

- Articulate a Personal Mission - What is the Reason you're doing this and what do you want to offer?

- Cultivate the habit of setting goals that you can achieve — What do you want to do? How close are you to achieving it? What steps do you need to take?

- Lean into learning - Mistakes are important but only when you notice and utilize them.

Reset & Re-cycle

- Cultivate the habit of stopping to check in - Don't just keep plowing forward through mistakes. If you take the time to stop, breathe, and check in, you can reset your cognition, awareness, relationship, and effort, to be more effective.

- Cultivate acceptance, even friendship, with being in endless process - Set goals, practice, create a -product, enjoy, evaluate, rejuvenate, begin again.

- You are worthy. The best you can do is enough. Reset your expectations and stay in process.
